PET Bottles Get Added to the Ecosystem Each Minute

Every year, we are dumping more than 300 million tonnes of plastic waste on the planet. Our oceans are the receiving body for much of the plastic waste generated on land. Estimates suggest that almost 5.25 trillion individual plastic particles are floating on the surface of our oceans and this massive waste weighs more than 2,44,000 tonnes.

20,000 bottles manufactured per second and more than a million plastic bottles are dumped in the ecosystem each minute. Out of 481 billion plastic bottles produced every year, only 9%, that is, less than 45 billion bottles are recycled. Plastic bottles take almost 1,000 years to decompose which is putting almost 700 species on the brink of extinction.

Did you know that human health is fundamentally linked to the oceans as more than 70% of the oxygen produced in the atmosphere is produced from marine plants. It takes 1,000 years for plastic bottles to decompose while continuously leaking pollutants to the soil and water. Plastic bottles decompose into microplastics which are then consumed by marine animals. This damage and death of marine life is indirectly impacting human health. Microplastics have been detected not only in commercial seafood but also in drinking water. It is high time we take responsibility and break free from plastic.

INTRODUCING

Only one out of six plastic bottles produced are recycled. That means they either end up in landfills or in our oceans and stay around for the next 1,000 years or more. The leading vision at Welspun Flooring is creating optimum stakeholder value through sustainable solutions. Our team understood the challenges of the ever growing plastic pollution and identified an opportunity to create an impact through reduction of plastic bottle pollution. We believe that our ResilonX initiative is a stepping stone in tackling this massive problem.

Welspun Flooring intends to create PET yarn through the recycling of plastic bottles. Welspun Flooring processes the raw plastic waste like water bottles and converts them into plastic flakes. The plastic flakes are converted to plastic pellets. The plastic pellets are then woven into yarn. This yarn is used to make the ResilonX carpet tiles at Welspun Flooring.

CERTIFICATIONS

STeP

STeP by OEKO-TEX® stands for Sustainable Textile & Leather Production and is a modular certification system for production facilities in the textile and leather industry. The goal of STeP is to implement environmentally friendly production processes in the long term, to improve health and safety and to promote socially responsible working conditions at production sites. The target groups for STeP certification are textile and leather manufacturers as well as brands and retailers.

CRI GLP Certified

Green Label Plus - These enhanced programs set higher standards for IAQ and ensure that the carpet, adhesive, and cushion products meet the most stringent criteria for low chemical emissions.

Zero Waste

This Certificate states that our facility has achieved Zero Waste Standard with 98% waste diversion from landfills during a 12 month review period as per Standard: SCS Zero Waste Standard v1 November 2020.

Global Recycled Certified

Global Recycled Standard - This certification benefits the company, its consumers and other stakeholders by aligning definitions of tracking and tracing recycled input materials across multiple platforms. It also enables the brand and its consumers to make informed decisions.

IGBC Platinum Certified

Indian Green Building Council - Our manufacturing facility is built in compliance with green building practices of using less water, following energy efficient practices, conserving natural resources and generating less waste.
